Tzedakah
Tzedakah is the Hebrew word for "righteousness" or "charity."
One of the basic tenets of Judaism is the act of giving Tzedekah
on a regular basis and in commemoration of lifecycle events and
special occasions. Tzedekah is a meaningful way to mark
an occasion of joy-the birth of a child, a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, wedding,
anniversary, or birthday-or to pay tribute to the memory of a departed
loved one.
Brith
Sholom offers many opportunities for giving Tzedakah through
a contribution to one of our many synagogue funds. The synagogue
will send a card acknowledging the donation to the person being
honored, or to the family of a person being memorialized. Each donation
will also be acknowledged in the monthly bulletin.
Special
funds include the Haftarah Scroll fund, which offers the opportunity
to dedicate one or more haftarot for special occasions, such as
a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, aufruf or wedding anniversary. The Endowment
Fund provides a variety of dedication opportunities, such as the
Kiddush Fund, the Rabbinic Endowment, the Cantorial Endowment, educational
programming, religious school scholarships, the Cemetery Restoration
Fund, and programs that benefit our teens and college students.

Other
Charitable Contributions
Distributing
our tzedakah funds is intended to be a deliberate process. In
our world, we are all solicited by a large number of
Jewish and non-Jewish charities. To help you with your decision
making, you may check out many charities on the Charity
Navigator website. Once you have searched for
the name
of a charity, if you click
on the name, it will give you more detailed information. Please
keep in mind, this is one source of evaluation and it is difficult
to compare one organization with another because their purposes
may be very different.
