| Women
and Minyan
Women
and men receive aliyot on the same basis. Because of the
nature of Jewish law, a sense of responsibility hiyuv,
must precede certain privileges, and that is why one is not counted
in a minyan before bar/bat mitzvah. At Brith Sholom, women
have the choice of whether they wish to be counted in a minyan
or not. Some women prefer to maintain the two thousand year old
exception from public prayer responsibility and, therefore, not
be counted in a minyan. Whereas some women prefer to be
counted in the minyan and, therefore, have accepted the
prayer responsibility and signify that status by wearing a head
covering at all services and a tallit at all appropriate
services. The women who choose to be counted in the minyan
may also lead all services. |
