Brit Milah/Baby Naming

A male baby is given his Hebrew name as part of the brit milah, or ritual circumcision ceremony, on the eighth day following birth. At Brith Sholom, the naming of a baby girl takes place during a Shabbat morning service as soon after the birth as the mother and baby can join us. The mother and father usually receive an aliyah to the Torah and, following the aliyah, the baby is brought up to the bimah for the naming ceremony. Grandparents and siblings then join the family on the bimah for special prayers and blessings.
