Aufruf
The
aufruf ceremony honors a bride and groom shortly before
their marriage. The word aufruf is derived from the German
word for "calling up" and refers to being called up for an aliyah
to the Torah. The groom, often together with the bride, is called
up for an aliyah. Following the aliyah, the Rabbi
offers a special prayer for the couple's future, and the congregation
offers its good wishes. An aufruf is usually held on the
Shabbat immediately preceding the wedding. If that is not practical,
it is scheduled for the prior Shabbat.
